Bully Prevention: Recognizing, Reporting, and Responding
Tuesday, September 18, 2018 9am to 3pm
About this Event
4747 E. Elk Park Drive, Columbia, MO 65201
Bullying has become a pervasive problem among school-aged youth. Currently, 1 in 5 students report high levels of victimization at school. These experiences are associated with long- and short-term mental health, behavioral, and academic outcomes. As a result, all 50 states and Washington, DC have enacted legislation related to bullying and bully prevention. Additionally, 65% of states require annual teacher and staff training related to bully prevention. Unfortunately, these legislative efforts do not provide direction for implementing bully prevention programming at the school level. Therefore, schools are left to independently design programming or purchase expensive commercial programs. This workshop is designed to support administrators, teachers, and support staff in the development of school or district specific policy and program development.
The activities explored in this workshop will include:
• Understanding the bullying dynamic and associated roles,
• Recognizing risk, protective, and maintaining factors,
• Strategies for supporting at-risk youth,
• Establishing a system-wide bully prevention plan and assessment and reporting protocol,
• Conducting behavioral screeners,
• Implementing school-wide, targeted, and individualized interventions,
• Understanding legal requirements, and
• Communicating and incorporating community and family supports
Overall, this workshop is designed to provide all participants with the skills and materials to return to their home school and begin bully prevention implementation.
LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED.
