Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties: Helping Students with Dyslexia and Other Reading Issues

Implementation of the new Missouri state dyslexia law begins this school year. To support school districts in this work, Dr. David Kilpatrick will present in Columbia, Missouri on October 12. Dr. Kilpatrick’s book, Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, will be the focus of this presentation to address how children learn to read and why some children struggle. This book is used by DESE and the RPDC Dyslexia Consultants as a source of information and study. Knowledge will be used from this text to design more educationally relevant assessments and to guide intervention recommendations. Studies consistently show that the most commonly used reading interventions provide limited benefits.

However, research has also shown that there are approaches available that yield very large and sustained reading gains for weak readers. Participants will leave with an understanding of the role of phonemic proficiency in boosting reading skills in struggling readers, plus recent advances in understanding word-level reading problems.

David A. Kilpatrick, PhD, is associate professor of psychology for the State University of New York, College at Cortland. He is a New York State certified school psychologist with 28 years of experience in schools. He has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology since 1994. Dr. Kilpatrick is a leading researcher and the author of two books on reading: Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties and Equipped for Reading Success.
