Focus on Africa Research Presentations will take place in Memorial Union room S203 on the campus of the University of Missouri. You are cordially invited to attend a presentation and discussion event.
Our guest speaker will be Dr. Oye Ideki Currently Dr Ideki is a visiting scientist in the Atmospheric Sciences program, School of Natural Resources, University of Missouri, Columbia MO USA under the mentorship of Prof Tony Lupo where he is working on the interconnection between sea surface temperature and rainfall intensities in the Gulf of Guinea.
 
The titleof his presentation: "Extreme rainfall and flooding in Africa"
 
For the 7th year in a row, we are continuing with the theme of FOCUS ON AFRICA. The purpose of the discussion is to encourage scholars with international interests to meet each other, stimulate each other’s thinking, and potentially lead to the creation of a broader research network and joint scholarship. Topics across the year are chosen to highlight the intersection among multiple disciplinary perspectives with a common geographical focus.

Speaker(s) Information

Dr Oye Ideki holds B.sc Geography and M. SC and PhD Climatology all from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State Nigeria. He is a lecturer and associate Dean in the Department of Meteorology and Climate Change, Nigeria Maritime University Okerenkoko Delta State Nigeria.

Dr Ideki specialized in extreme climate events particularly drought and flood climatology. His PhD thesis was on drought risk assessment using space base and meteorological systems while his M.sc dissertation was on urban channel adjustments and flood vulnerability in port Harcourt Rivers state Nigeria

Dr Ideki is a renowned climate scientist and has worked as climate change specialist with reputable organizations in Nigeria. He was a consultant to CSDevNet on stakeholders input on country analysis of the outcome of COP 25 implementation in Nigeria and in 2020 served as coach/mentor for CTCN/Seedstars climate innovation lab African Region.

Dr Ideki is an astute researcher, international journal reviewer and has participated in several national and international fora on climate change adaptation and energy transition. Dr Ideki has over 10 years volunteering experience as climate and environmental justice campaigner in Nigeria. He recently won the UK base Micro grants on climate adaptation and alliance with a research team from Federal University of Technology Akure Nigeria.

Due to his research productivity, in 2021, he won the prestigious United Nations Economic Commission for Africa UNECA young Africa fellowshipaward and was deployed to the Africa Institute for Development and Economic Planning IDEP in Dakar Senegal where he is conducted collaborative research on climate change, coastal erosion and environmental migration in West and East Africa.

Currently Dr Ideki is a visiting scientist in the Atmospheric Sciences program, School of Natural Resources, University of Missouri, Columbia MO USA under the mentorship of Prof Tony Lupo where he is working on the interconnection between sea surface temperature and rainfall intensities in the Gulf of Guinea
