Join us for “Exploring the Structural Design of Language” a keynote presentation by Dr. Michael Putnam, College of Arts & Science-English, SLLC, MizzouForward faculty candidate.  Dr. Putnam will present on his research for approximately 40-minutes with a 20-minute question and answer session to follow.

Michael T. Putnam holds a PhD from the University of Kansas and is currently Professor of German & Linguistics at Penn State University and Visiting Professor of Linguistics at the University of Greenwich (UK). He also currently serves as the Director of the Linguistics Program, Associate Director of the Center for Language Science, and the Co-Director of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies at Penn State. His research seeks to gain insight into how we can best model and investigate the structural properties of human language. Adopting a modular architecture of the mind, he pursues research questions that investigate how sub-systems of language, e.g., phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, interact with one another and create natural language as we know it.

He holds a special interest in the syntax and morphology of bi- and multilingual individuals and communities, with a particular focus on endangered and heritage languages. His research program combines theoretical rigor with experimental design in both traditional laboratory and field settings, often in collaboration with students and colleagues. His most recent research targets the development of the mental lexicon across the lifespan, contributing further to studies on acquisition, attrition, and language change. He strives to make a lasting societal impact with his research in collaborations involving the documentation of endangered and heritage languages and through advocacy and public outreach of how linguistics and language science can positively impact multiple fields of study. He also maintains a high commitment to professional service, particularly through administrative roles, editorial service, and the mentoring of students.
