MizzouForward Keynote – Mechanistic Interactions between Blood Gas Homeostasis and Neurophysiology

Join us for “Mechanistic Interactions between Blood Gas Homeostasis and Neurophysiology" a keynote presentation by College of Veterinary Medicine - Biomedical Sciences, MizzouForward faculty candidate, Dr. Alfredo Garcia. Dr. Garcia will present on his research for approximately 40-minutes with a 20-minute question and answer session to follow.

Dr. Alfredo Garcia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine-Emergency Medicine at The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL.  Dr. Garcia completed his B.Sc. in Biological Science at The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH and earned his Ph.D. from Wright State University, Dayton, OH as well as postdoctoral fellowships in Neuroscience at The University of Chicago and Autonomic Neurophysiology at Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle, WA.

Dr. Garcia is broadly interested in the reciprocal interactions between blood gas homeostasis and neurophysiology.  Two specific lines of investigation focus on: (1) Understanding how intermittent hypoxia remodels neurocognitive and autonomic networks to cause physiological and behavioral outcomes common to untreated sleep apnea; and (2) Elucidating neurophysiological mechanisms that promote respiratory tolerance and stability in response to blood gas challenge that is associated with opioid overdose.
