Building on the Strengths of Latino Families and Children to Foster School Readiness
Building on the strengths of Latino families and children in the U.S. is one of the best ways to support children's readiness for school and reduce the negative consequences of adverse childhood experiences. Dr. Palermo will present his research in this area by showing how maternal parenting stress and depression during children’s infancy negatively influences Latino children’s academic readiness for kindergarten and how mothers’ education can mitigate those adverse effects. Dr. Palermo will also discuss his research showing how building on Latino children’s Spanish literacy and math skills in preschool can facilitate their learning of those skills in English prior to entering kindergarten.
