ARTIST STATEMENT FOR SOME SELF-CORRECTION NEEDED

This project explores the behaviors of indifference surrounding the abdication of personal and societal responsibility in American culture. Themes of complacency and selfishness are utilized to encourage self-corrective action that challenges viewers to avoid unhealthy extremes of behavior as well as moderate character flaws that negatively affect the relationship between the individual and society. The work does not simply state the existence of this behavior of imbalance but, rather, critiques the willful continuation of indifference. It is critical to understand that this project is addressing situations in which individuals willingly engage in destructive behavior for hedonistic purposes. Humor is utilized so the work is not overtly abrasive and inaccessible but is viewed as lighthearted social critique. The sculptures touch upon the aforementioned themes with the intention of inspiring awareness within the individual and returning to an increased, selfless consideration towards the collective, which, for this project is defined as society at large.
