Thingification, a One Woman Show by Duriel Harris

Thingification is a one woman show that combines poetry, performance, music, and dance to invigorate audiences with the transformative energy of embodied word-sound-power.

Set in various public and private spaces, the play transports audiences through time-space enacting their collective ritual participation in the struggle against thingification—the annihilating objectifying force at the core of all oppressions. Even as they perform aspects of sexuality, gender, race, class and other facets of their identities, the characters in Thingification question and queer those constructs.

Accessing their total, essential, particular humanness, the characters confront and resist societal expectations and beliefs through the embodied verbal art of signifying.  Taking up Funkadelic’s timely directive (“Free your mind… and your ass will follow”), its equally compelling converse, and the provocative tension between the two, Thingification transforms trauma into transcendence.
