Excavations on the Rock of Lough Key, Ireland, 2017-23:  A Gaelic Castle of the Thirteenth Century

Dr. Thomas Finan of Saint Louis University has led excavations on the Rock of Lough Key, a very high status Gaelic castle now known to have flourished in the thirteenth century.  Over the last decade Finan has led an interdisciplinary team drawing together historical, archaeological, and anthropological data in order to identify the social and economic basis of Gaelic lordship in the middle ages.  This lecture will focus on presenting the archaeological finds from the excavations as a means of drawing wider medieval European connections outside of Ireland.
