    • Come join MU African Interdisciplinary Studies Hub as we welcome twelve scholars throughout the year! Once a month in Memorial Union N-204 we will be introducing a different Africanist to discuss the study and understanding of Africa. All students, staff, faculty and community members are welcome. Each presentation will be held on the first Wednesday of each month from 12pm- 1 pm in Memorial Union N-204. Come hungry because pizza will be provided! Our next presentation will be November 6 at 12pm.

Henok G. Woldu (PhD)Biostatistician | Data Scientist | Public Health Researcher

Dr. Woldu grew up in a rural village in his country Eritrea. Experiencing many of the health issues people in low income and low middle-income countries are facing now himself firsthand, it is deep in his heart to work in improving the wellbeing of those people. After earning his BA in Statistics and Diploma in Economics from Asmara University, he worked for 5 years at Asmara College of Health Science as an instructor and health researcher in his country on a project related to HIV, TB, Malaria, Schistosomiasis and Children undernutrition. After leaving his country in 2011 and living in Sudan as a refugee for about 2 years, getting scholarship, Dr. Woldu came to US in 2013 to pursue his PhD in Biostatistics. Since coming to US, Dr. Woldu has been involved in doing research related to Tuberculosis, malaria, obesity, diabetes and mental health using his extensive analytical expertise. Currently Dr. Woldu is working as Assistant Research Professor in the School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia.

Annie Mapulanga is a visiting scholar under Borlaug Fellowship which is hosted by CAFNR International Programs of the University of Missouri. Her research involves using geospatial analytical techniques to assess land use/land cover in Malawi, with particular interest in mapping agricultural land use. Her academic background is agricultural economics and she is currently working with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining as an Economist. Her recent publication is on ‘The Effects of deforestation on access to clean drinking water’ at https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1814970116.

Alfred Mwanyika is a Borlaug Fellow and visiting scholar at the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural resources (CANFR). He is pursuing his research training on detection methods of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in foods. He is from United Republic of Tanzania where he works as Senior Technologist at College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of Sokoine University of Agriculture. His researches focus is on animal health improvement and also public health. The title of his presentation is: Promotion of food security growth in developing countries through Borlaug Fellowship training.
