MizzouForward Keynote: Materials in Extreme Environments
About this Event
Join us for “Materials in Extreme Environments” a keynote presentation by Dr. Lingfeng He, College of Engineering-Mechanical & Aerospace, MizzouForward faculty candidate. Dr. He will present on his research for approximately 40-minutes with a 20-minute question and answer session to follow.
Dr. Lingfeng He is an Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and holds a join faculty appointment with Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Prior to joining NCSU in 2022, he served as a distinguished staff scientist (Level V) and led the High-Resolution Materials Characterization Group at INL. Dr. He leads the Materials In eXtremes (MIX) lab at NCSU. Dr. He serves as the PI/Co-PI for 22 R&D projects funded by multiple agencies, as well as 50 Nuclear Science User Facility (NSUF) projects besides, in addition to supporting several DOE programs. He is the top collaborator at NSUF. He has published 152 peer-reviewed journal articles, with an H-index of 42. He is the recipient of the INL Laboratory Director’s 2020 Exceptional Scientific Achievement Award.
The development and qualification of materials for nuclear reactors and aerospace rely on a fundamental understanding of their behavior under stress, radiation, corrosion, and ultra-high-temperature extremes. Over the past 20 years, Dr. He has advanced both fundamental materials science and applied research focused on the development and qualification of ceramics, alloys, and composites for extreme environments. His research programs include: (i) development of ultrahigh-temperature ceramics for aerospace; (ii) radiation damage in both nuclear fuels and structural materials; (iii) alloy corrosion in molten-salt reactor environments; and (iv) mechanical behavior of ceramics and alloys. In his presentation, he will provide an overview of his past and current research, outline future research directions, and discuss potential collaboration opportunities at Mizzou.
