About this Event
Join us for “New Horizons in Plant Shikimate Metabolism” a keynote presentation by Dr. Joseph Lynch, College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Plant Sciences and Technology, MizzouForward faculty candidate. Dr. Lynch will present on his research for approximately 40-minutes with a 20-minute question and answer session to follow.
Joseph Lynch was born and raised in Washinton state. After receiving his BS in Biology from Gonzaga University, he earned his PhD in Molecular Plant Sciences at Washington State University’s Institute of Biological Chemistry, studying flavin cofactor metabolism with Dr Sanja Roje. He did his postdoctoral studies under Dr Natalia Dudareva at Purdue University, where he worked on phenylalanine metabolism in plants, synthesis of volatiles, and mechanisms of volatile phenylpropanoid and terpenoid transport and emission. Currently, he is Assistant Professor of Biochemistry in the Division of Plant at Soil Sciences at West Virginia University, where his lab studies intercompartmental metabolism of aromatic amino acids and related compounds in plants. When not in the lab or classroom, he can often be found playing in his garden or doing various activities with his wife and four daughters.
In plants, the shikimate pathway provides the precursors for thousands of primary and secondary metabolites that have facilitated adaption to diverse environments. Many of these compounds have utility for their pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, agronomic, and industrial properties. The Lynch Lab studies the intercompartmental nature of the metabolism of shikimate and its derivatives and works toward harnessing the shikimate pathway’s potential to provide for a more sustainable future.
