MizzouForward Keynote – Synergistic Catalysis in Water:  Selective, Scalable, & Sustainable

Join us for “Synergistic Catalysis in Water:  Selective, Scalable, & Sustainable" a keynote presentation by College of Arts & Science-Chemistry, MizzouForward faculty candidate, Dr. Sachin Handa. Dr. Handa will present on his research for approximately 40-minutes with a 20-minute question and answer session to follow.


Prof. Sachin Handa is currently a tenured associate professor in the chemistry department at the University of Louisville. In less than four years, he completed his Ph.D. in 2013 and then worked as a postdoc fellow with Prof. Bruce Lipshutz from 2013-2016. He started his independent career in 2016. His research interests are green chemistry, energy, nanocatalysisand photochemistry. Recently, he has received the NSF CAREER award, Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award in Physical Sciences by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and Peter J. Dunn Award for Green Chemistry and Engineering Impact in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Besides fundamental research, his research significantly focuses on synthetic problems associated with the pharmaceutical industry, and thus, also funded by several top pharmaceutical industries. He also serves on editorial boards of various journals, such as ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, Green Chemistry Letters & Reviews, and Molecules.


A switch from petroleum-derived chemistry to water is long overdue. Unfortunately, water is predominantly used in syntheses for reaction work-up despite having the potential to be used as the reaction medium or even more than the reaction medium. With many noteworthy features, its correct implementation in chemistry and chemical engineering can lead to more effective and environmentally cleaner chemistry, especially for the sustainable manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. While achieving this mission, Handa research lab aims to enhance discovery through fundamental science and train students to create a future workforce specializing in safer organic syntheses, catalysis, and drug discovery for a sustainable environment and health. This mission also promotes diversity and inclusion through students’ direct collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
