In order to understand how technology is changing the lives of students in our classrooms, we need to know more about how social media impacts them. This session will explore some popular social media applications and how students may be using them. We will explore and discuss the connections they are making as digital natives while considering best ways to inform parents. Participants will also shift focus to explore how bullying has changed in response to technological advances.

Using current research we’ll examine connections between smartphones, social media applications, and the occurrences of bullying among students. Discussion will surround claims that students’ communication skills have changed. The ability to text and post on social media is impacting person to person discussion and deep conversations. Students are surrounded by the internet, social media, and other digital innovations. This professional development day will encompass sites that we need to be cautious about and monitor as well as how technology has altered how bullying has evolved over the last few years.
