Christina King, doctoral student in the department of Learning, Teaching & Curriculum with an emphasis on Literacy Education, will offer ideas for future teachers seeking to locate and use authentic diverse children's literature across the elementary curriculum. Participants will become more familiar with the Coretta Scott King Award - awarded to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. Through a cultural x-rays activity, participants will work on examining the culture of characters featured in selected Coretta Scott King awardee and honoree texts alongside illuminating theirs and our shared culture.
