Title / Topic: Using AI to Improve Clinical Research Consent Forms
Speaker: Bryce Fletcher, CCRP, Research Project Analyst, PhD Candidate, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, MU HealthCare
Overview: This presentation explores the use of AI to enhance the efficacy of informed consent forms in clinical research. Traditional consent processes often struggle with readability and participant comprehension, potentially compromising the ethical integrity of participant engagement. During this presentation, we will discuss a study designed to assess whether AI can produce consent forms that are not only easier to understand but also more engaging compared to those written by researchers. The research integrates both quantitative analysis of readability metrics and qualitative feedback from a Research Patient Advisory Team to evaluate two versions of consent forms: one generated by researchers and the other by AI.
Objectives:
Understand the challenges and limitations of traditional informed consent processes in clinical research. Examine the potential benefits and concerns associated with using AI to generate informed consent documents. Identify improvements and ethical considerations for integrating AI into the consent process.
Continuing Education (CE): SOCRA members may claim 1.0 CE credit per hour of education. SOCRA members will receive Certificates of Attendance at the completion of the event.
